THE STORY OF OUR HUMBLE BEGINNINGS......
The Gananoque Pirate Invasion Board started in spring of 2016 as a concerned group of local residents who had heard that the organizers were cancelling the town’s annual pirate festival and banded together to fund-raise to ensure the festival happened. This committed group of residents were very successful — with businesses and local residents donating generously to support it—raising just under $7000 to put on a festival in the town park that resulted in the engagement of the entire community. In 2017 we were given a grant from Gananoque Town Council of $5000 toward infrastructure purchases to grow the festival - so new structures and activities were added. We again raised about $7000 more and we were able to hold the festival for its second year! Local charities like the Parrot Sanctuary and volunteer organizations like the Youth In Policing Initiative (YIPI) program and St. John's Ambulance participated in the event, providing exceptional support as part of the team, and gained valuable exposure. Local businesses were able to vend at the festival and stores all over Gananoque have seen improved sales as a result! Operating on limited funds, the festival was designed to be a more old-fashion, hands-on, immersive family experience of an authentic pirate encampment and rustic entertainment tailored to meet the needs of all ages. This included a very well-attended adult-oriented show as part of the festivities. We discovered this approach was a recipe for success—with over 1500 people attending the first year, and over 2700 people in the second year, we aim to see three times that many this year with the promotional work underway. This year we are hoping to maintain the rustic flavor and build upon it - investing in more physical infrastructure to ensure the longevity of the festival, beginning the journey to non-profit status, and through extensive community engagement and partnerships — cementing the festival’s place as Gananoque’s signature destination event that draws crowds both locally and internationally. Even with the festival’s small beginnings, we were surprised when the world took notice of our festival—and recognized it with a prestigious award out of Burbank California for 3rd best pirate festival in 2016, and as the 1st Place winner in 2017! This award, competing against festivals that have been running decades and have attendances in the tens of thousands (like The Texas Pirate Festival and the Northern California Pirate Festival) shows that it is a successful formula; focusing on a grass-roots authentic pirate experience, that brings to the forefront the cultural ties of piracy in the area in a low-tech & immersive experience like Disney Land. Through growing our attractions and exhibits while still maintaining the old-fashioned core pirate feel, with support of organizations like yours, this event is well-poised become an enormous draw to a wide audience —including cosplayers, reenactors, history-buffs, and pirate aficionados from all walks of life. Pirates are loved by all ages, and this is a strength of the festival design that capitalizes on this - with efforts aimed at ensuring there really is something for everyone.
